Is Sri Lanka a safe place for a holiday?

i plan to go to Sri Lanka around Christmas with a friend who is from that country and im looking forward to but my mother is nagging me about the dangers about Sri Lanka, she was being ridiculous, she said i could get raped? she mentioned everything like corruption to poverty. so basicly i like to know what are the bad things about Sri Lanka?
