The term martial arts?

When did people start refer to chinese martial arts as kung fu? Since some older people I know refer to chinese gung-fu as chinese boxing. When did people stop referring to (insert country name here) boxing to (insert country name here) martial arts. Like did westerners ever refer to Te or Karate as Japanese boxing? I know it has a lot to did with when westerners first were exposed to asian martial arts they just called it (insert country name here) boxing. Did people make the change in name after all the bruce lee movies?
